Enter the area you're tiling and the tile size, and this calculator works out exactly how many tiles and boxes to order, with a wastage allowance built in for cuts and breakages.
How to use it
- Enter the length and width of the area to be tiled.
- Enter the tile size in mm, cm or inches.
- Set a wastage allowance and tiles-per-box to get a box count and total cost.
The formula
Worked example
A 4m × 3m area (12 m²) with 300mm × 300mm tiles (0.09 m² each) and 10% wastage needs 147 tiles. At 10 tiles per box, that's 15 boxes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much wastage should I allow for tiling?
10% is standard for a straightforward layout. Increase it to 15–20% for diagonal patterns, small tiles, or a room with lots of corners and cuts.
Does this account for grout width?
No — it's based on tile face size only. For very large format tiles or wide grout lines, allow slightly extra wastage.
